Variable-Speed Furnace Blowers: Better Home Comfort, Higher Home Savings

Variable-Speed Furnace Blowers: Better Home Comfort, Higher Home SavingsIf you’d like to realize greater savings from your heating and air conditioning equipment, consider variable-speed furnace blowers. The technology that these motors use is substantially different than the older single-speed motors, which adds up to energy savings and greater comfort indoors.

These air handlers use motors that consume far less electricity than standard motors because they handle electricity differently. The electronically commutated motors (ECMs) do not have brushes and have built-in inverters to convert AC power to DC power. DC motors use less electricity than AC equivalents. While this adds to energy savings, the motors also start and stop slowly, which reduces the power load that the motor demands at startup.

Variable-speed furnace blowers provide other benefits besides energy savings:

  • Increased comfort: The motors run more slowly than conventional motors, which circulates the conditioned air throughout your home longer and more efficiently. Instead of blowing at a high speed when the furnace kicks in, the slow starting speed doesn’t create a blast of cold air. All the conditioned air in the ducts heats or cools your home instead of sitting inside the ducts at the end of the cycle, wasting the fuel to condition your air.
  • Better humidity control: Since the blower runs longer, the coils have a chance to remove more humidity from your home, helping the air feel cooler throughout the summer.
  • Improved air quality: When the blower runs longer, it sends air constantly through your furnace’s filters, trapping more dust, pollen and particles. Anyone suffering from allergies may experience relief with the longer run-time that variable-speed furnace blowers provide. The blowers can be set to run continuously without an upswing in your utility bill.
  • Quieter operation: Since the blowers do not run as fast as other motors, less noise is present in the home when they operate.

If you would like to learn more about how these variable-speed furnace blowers can help you save money and benefit your family, contact Smoky Mountain Heating & Air. We are happy to answer any of your questions.
