Ductless mini splits afford Asheville area homeowners the convenience of efficiently heating and cooling new additions, home offices and any areas that may be difficult to heat and cool. Explore the versatility of these compact systems to see if a ductless installation is right for your home project.
How ductless heating and cooling works
Ductless mini splits are compact heat pumps that are comprised of three components: an outdoor unit containing the compressor and condenser, indoor wall-mounted blowers and a flexible conduit that houses refrigerant tubing, a power cable and suction. The conduit needs just a 3-inch cavity through the outside wall of your home to connect the outdoor unit to up to four indoor blowers.
Heated or cooled air is delivered directly at the source—the indoor blowers—so there are no bulky ducts to contend with, and there’s no air loss or wasted energy often associated with poor duct design.
Advantages of ductless heating and cooling
- Installation: There’s a stark contrast for time and expense between installing a ductless mini split and extending ductwork to add-ons and retrofits. Extending bulky ductwork is often not an option. In these situations, ductless mini splits provide a space-saving, economical solution. Installation can typically be completed in one day, as opposed to a multi-day process for extending ducts. This reduces labor costs for installation by your HVAC contractor.
- Home comfort: Temperature control for each indoor blower is independently controlled. This provides you a zoning system, which boosts energy efficiency by heating and cooling areas as needed. Ductless systems are so quiet that you may relax in personalized comfort and not even realize the system is running.
- Energy savings: Ductless systems are available with high SEER and HSPF ratings that easily top furnaces for heating and match many high-efficiency heat pumps and A/C systems for cooling. Couple ductless mini splits with zoning system savings for an efficient heating/cooling system you may install almost anywhere in your home.
