Fall Is The Right Time To Change Your HVAC Filter

changing air filter asheville north carolinaMany homeowners may not realize how important the HVAC filter is to performance and efficiency.  Even if every other component of your heating and cooling system is in perfect condition, a dirty filter alone can rob your system of up to 15 percent efficiency along with a host of additional problems.

You can keep your home comfortable and save money if you maintain your HVAC filter properly.

  • Check it every month and change or clean as needed. The weather, age of your air conditioning equipment and several other factors affect how quickly your filter gets dirty. Make a habit of checking it every month. Generally speaking, you should never go more than three months without changing or cleaning it. As soon as you notice it’s dirty, replace or clean the filter.
  • Keep extras if you use disposable HVAC filters. It helps to keep a couple extra filters in the home so that you can change your filter when you notice it’s time. If you have to make a special trip to the store, you may not change it promptly so your air quality and air conditioning equipment are at risk.
  • Use a filter change indicator. The first two tips are an inexact science, to say the least. If you want more exact timing, install an indicator light to measure airflow and notify you when it’s time to change or clean your filter.
  • Look for air quality issues. If you notice dirt, dust or mold in your home, your HVAC filters may be partly to blame. The filter may be dirty or you may not have the best type for your home. Try cleaning or changing it but, if the problems persist, check into a higher quality filter and make sure the size you’re using fits the opening snugly.
