Is Your HVAC System Safe From Power Surges?

Is Your HVAC System Safe From Power Surges? With computers, stereos, TVs and other electronics, surge protection seems like an obvious need to most homeowners. With HVAC equipment, though, the electronic components are not very noticeable, so the need for surge protection is not as obvious. But since it does have sensitive electronics, it is just as important to keep your HVAC system safe from power surges.

Just one surge can harm your system, but even if a single surge causes no clear harm, repeated surges will wear down your system, cutting years off of its life.

Although you may think of lightning as the primary cause of a power surge, lightning is only the most visible cause. Faulty wiring and downed power lines are more common causes, but the most common causes are your power company and high-power electrical devices like hair dryers and vacuums that you use at home, as well as large appliances powering on and off.

A whole-house surge protector for your HVAC system monitors the incoming electricity and cuts the flow to your HVAC equipment when there’s a spike. This shuts your system down and saves it from the harm the surge could have caused.

To find out how to restart your system after it is shut down, it is best to contact the contractor who installed it, or you can check the manual. This will be a basic procedure, but the steps for each system are slightly different.

Since you spent thousands of dollars on your HVAC system, it makes sense to invest a small amount in protecting it from something as common as power surges. A whole-house surge protector will keep your HVAC system running for years longer than it would without one.
